Types of sleep disorders vary according to the specific cases and symptoms of the problem. Some people develop a disorder because of a health condition while others may develop problems that arise out of poor habits.
Insomnia
Insomnia is one of the types of sleep disorders that can be a symptom of other conditions. The sleeplessness may appear in a number of ways:
- Unable to fall asleep
- Waking during the night
- Waking very early in the morning
- Unable to stay asleep
Breathing Problems
Breathing problems can lead to sleep disorders, namely sleep apnea and snoring. This type of sleep condition can result in loud or disrupted breathing.
Neurological Problems
Neurological problems can disrupt sleep. Narcolepsy is a type of sleep disorder that is neurological in nature. People who have this condition fall asleep suddenly and without warning.
Movement Disorders
Some sleeping problems involve movement. Restless leg syndrome and periodic limb movement disorder are examples of movement problems that can disturb sleep.
Sleep Paralysis
Sleep paralysis involves the inability to move, although the sleeper feels conscious. It appears that the sleeper is suspended between wakefulness and sleep.

Sleep Behaviors
Unusual behaviors during sleep can be very troublesome, not only for the sleeper but for those living with him as well. Sleepwalking and talking are examples of sleeping behaviors that can be disruptive.
Hypersomnia
While many types of sleep disorders tend to focus on sleep deprivation, hypersomnia involves getting too much sleep. The problem can stem from illnesses, depression or neurological problems. The benefits of treating a sleep disorder are significant, whether you are getting too little or too much.
